UEFA fined Aston Villa for breaching financial fair play rules

  • Aston Villa must pay a UEFA fine for breaching the Financial Fair Play rules in the 2025 season
  • Villa must pay €1 million, while €2 million is expected to be paid in the event of sanctions being imposed after 31 May
  • UEFA imposed the largest fine on the English club that breached the rules, with the amount being determined by the difference between the club’s spending and the allowed spending for the season

UEFA has approved financial sanctions for clubs that breached financial fair play rules. Aston Villa were fined 7.5 million euros ($8.6 million) — a reduction from the third-highest amount.

For the remaining UEFA clubs, the amounts are as follows: the club that breached the rules by 1 million euros ($1.14 million), and an additional 2 million euros were to be paid. However, by the end of the season, the club will have to pay a total of 31 million euros ($35.5 million) to avoid further financial sanctions.

The rest of the UEFA clubs faced the following fines: Strasbourg had to pay at least 15 million euros (13 million euros or $14.8 million), which is the highest sum among the 14 clubs. Fenerbahçe (7 million euros), and Nîmes, Juventus and Fiorentina — up to 6 million euros each.

In addition, it was noted that Aston Villa may face additional penalties due to the difference between the club’s spending and the allowed spending for the 2026 season. In particular, the club may be required to pay a fine of 10 million euros to the UEFA in the event of further breaches of the rules.
