Morocco knocks the Netherlands out of the 2026 World Cup

Morocco beat the Netherlands 3-2 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time and advanced to the round of 16 of the World Cup. In the next round, the team will face tournament hosts Canada on Saturday.
The Netherlands went ahead in the 72nd minute through a goal by Cody Gakpo, but Morocco equalized in the 91st minute thanks to a header from Youssef En-Nesyri. In the penalty shootout, the decisive kick was converted by Ismaïl Saibari.
After the match in Casablanca, celebrations began: fans took to the streets, set off flares and fireworks, and the festivities lasted until morning. In The Hague, by contrast, police clashed with part of the supporters after the Netherlands' exit.
According to police, heavy fireworks were used in the Schilderswijk district, and officers were pelted with stones and bottles. Riot police and a water cannon were deployed to disperse the crowd, and several people were detained for acts of public violence.
