MADRID (AP) — Spanish left back Alejandro “Alex” Grimaldo will move to Atletico Madrid from German club “Bayer Leverkusen” after the two clubs agreed on the transfer.

The 30-year-old fullback signed a contract through 2030. Under the deal, “Atletico” will pay a release clause of 22 million euros, which could rise to 25 million euros.

Grimaldo, who plays for Valencia, but is not a native of Spain. He won the Copa del Rey with Valencia, the “Europa League” with “Bayer Leverkusen” and the Spanish Super Cup with “Bayer Leverkusen,” scoring 14 goals in the 2023 season and moving to “Leverkusen.”

Over the 2024 season, he played for the German club in 145 matches, scoring 30 goals and providing 45 assists.

According to AP, Grimaldo could be a winger or a defensive midfielder. He has 14 matches for Spain and is expected to join the squad for the European Championship.

Spanish player Marc Cucurella, who moved from “Atletico” to “Real” last summer, will be the club’s second signing. Grimaldo, who is expected to be the club’s second major signing, is a defender.
