Admiral Paparo says he can’t allow any country’s sovereignty in the Indo-Pacific to be undermined

Speaking at the ASEAN summit in Thiho Mu, Admiral Samuel Paparo said in his speech that U.S. forces are in the region to ensure the stability of the Indo-Pacific, and the U.S. does not intend to allow any country to dominate the region or sweep away the hard-won sovereign rights of independent states.

Paparo said that the actions that are being taken are aimed at countering “false claims of legitimacy” in order to justify the use of force. He also said that there is “a ‘rule of law’ and a ‘rule by law,’” and that this difference is crucial in preventing escalation and ensuring that international law is respected. He added that China, rather than following international law, is trying to change the status quo in the region by using force.

In his remarks, Paparo said that the U.S. is concerned about the situation in the Indo-Pacific and that it is important to ensure that the region remains free and open. He noted that the U.S. will continue to support its partners in the region and to defend freedom of navigation and overflight.

Admiral Paparo also said that the U.S. “deterring China through strength, not through confrontation,” and added: “We will not let any nation dominate this region or sweep away the hard-fought sovereign rights of independent states.” In his remarks, he emphasized that the U.S. is committed to maintaining stability in the region and preventing escalation.

At the same conference, Filipino Admiral Gilberto Teodoro said that he agrees that China is trying to “push back” against countries in the region, and that the Philippines must be prepared to respond. He also said that China’s actions in the South China Sea are undermining peace and stability.

Also at the conference, ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hurn said that the situation in the Indo-Pacific is becoming more tense, and that ASEAN countries are closely monitoring developments. He noted that the ASEAN secretary-general said that the region’s countries should coordinate their efforts in order to respond to challenges and protect peace and stability.
