Who will win the first four congressional races

In the first four congressional races, voters in Washington and Missouri will choose candidates for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Material from Associated Press says that in those states, voters will face two separate systems for selecting candidates for the general election: “top two” in Washington and a different approach in Missouri.

In Washington’s “top two” system, all candidates compete against one another, and the two candidates with the most votes advance, regardless of party. Associated Press notes that four races in Washington will determine the final two candidates for the House seats. In Missouri, voters will choose candidates for the House seats, with the number of candidates determined by the rules for the state’s election system.

In the 3rd Congressional District, Associated Press says Washington’s top-two system advances Marie Gluesenkamp Perez. She is challenging three-term incumbent Dan Newhouse in the general election. In the 4th Congressional District, Associated Press says the top-two system advances Dan Newhouse, who is challenging challenger Jerrod Sessler.

Associated Press also reports that in Washington, the deadline is 8 p.m. PT (11 p.m. ET). In total, there were 1.1 million registered voters in the state, and in the first four races in 2024, a total of 2 million votes were cast.

El Pads and Associated Press also describe how Washington’s voting works: voters can drop ballots into vote drop boxes, and in 2024, turnout was close to 58.5%, while the share of votes cast in person was about 41.3%. Associated Press adds that in the four races, turnout was close to 699,000 ballots.

Missouri’s first vote in four races will include candidates for the House seats, and Associated Press says that Missouri’s election system is different from Washington’s. Associated Press notes that in the first vote, voters will choose candidates for the House seats through a primary system.

Associated Press says that in the 1st Congressional District, Missouri Democratic Wesley Bell faces a challenge from Republican Cori Bush. It adds that Bell defeated Bush in 2024 in the first election round by a margin of 6 percentage points, and that the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) supported Bell and campaigned against Bush.

Associated Press also reports that in Missouri, voters will decide on Amendment 4, which would change the state constitution by allowing voters to decide whether to allow the sale of alcohol. Amendment 5, meanwhile, would require the state to set a minimum sales tax rate.

Associated Press says that in Missouri, the deadline is 7 p.m. CT (8 p.m. ET). It also notes that in the 2024 general election, 4.4 million registered voters participated, and in the 2022 election, the state had about 586,000 votes cast for Republicans and about 322,000 votes cast for Democrats.

El Pads adds that in the four races, voters in Kansas, Michigan, Missouri, Virginia, and Washington will choose candidates for the general election. Associated Press notes that in the first four races, voters will decide on the winners through the state election rules.
