Two-Stage Sanctions Against CJNG: US Targets Mexico Cartels

On June 30, 2026, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced new sanctions targeting Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most notorious drug-trafficking groups.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) imposed sanctions on two Mexico-based companies that, according to the U.S. government, are tied to the cartel’s activities. Specifically, the scheme involves providing support for cartel operations through financial channels. The U.S. Treasury said the sanctions are aimed at disrupting the cartel’s ability to move money and fund its operations.

Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) also issued guidance for financial institutions. In particular, it issued a “high-priority” advisory to banks about suspicious activity reports related to Mexico, which could be linked to cartel-related financial flows.

In addition, the DEA said it is pursuing CJNG leadership in 21 of 32 Mexican states, as well as Sinaloa Cartel figures, who are being sought in 19 states. The U.S. agency said the case involves freezing cartel assets and disrupting their ability to operate.

Overall, the U.S. authorities said Mexican cartel groups have been using a network of front companies to launder drug proceeds and move them through financial channels. The U.S. said CJNG has been operating through a network of businesses in order to conceal the origin of funds and support its criminal activities.
