President Trump said on Tuesday that Iran has been discussing the possibility of a nuclear deal with the United States for a long time, adding that he believes it could be reached “very quickly,” as early as Tuesday, August 4, depending on the language used in the agreement.

Trump also said that, if the talks continue, it could take place through a protocol, with the United States fully controlling the process, and that Iran will not be able to do anything to prevent it. “It will be controlled,” he said. “If they do something, we will know.”

According to Trump, the nuclear deal would require Iran to stop enriching uranium, and the United States would have the right to verify compliance.

In the meantime, Iran says that it will not accept any restrictions on its nuclear program. The country’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Iran has not agreed to any deal that would limit its nuclear activities.

Earlier, The Guardian reported that, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll, most Americans support tightening sanctions on Iran, while 69% say Trump’s plan is not clear. The paper also noted that a majority of respondents believe the United States should not negotiate with Iran.
