ICE says Edwin Lopez-Cornejo died in custody at Delaney Hall

In New Jersey, a man who died in the custody of Delaney Hall. The case is connected to federal authorities, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which said that Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, 41-year-old El Salvadoran national, died after medical staff at University Hospital in Newark were called.

According to ICE, Lopez-Cornejo was taken to hospital care after being held for 18 days. The agency also said that the detainee had died while being transported to a hospital, and that a person on the scene called 911 for emergency medical assistance; the agency’s official cause of death was complications related to the medical condition.

In its filings, Delaney Hall says it is privately run by Geo Group. Associated Press also reported that the company said it had nothing to do with the deaths inside the facility, and that the facility had nothing to do with the problem of deaths inside.

Democratic lawmakers and civil rights organizations in New Jersey said they could be linked to the deaths, including the possibility that the deaths were the result of conditions at Delaney Hall. Sen. Cory Booker said Delaney Hall has been operating with no clear oversight, and that ICE should be held responsible for Lopez-Cornejo’s death, saying the agency allowed medical staff to be responsible for his death.

Meanwhile, a report said that another detainee who died at Delaney Hall died after being transferred to a different facility. Earlier, in 2023, the ICE agent Jean Wilson Brutus, who was named 41-year-old man; the agency said that the detainee had died while being transported to a hospital, and that medical staff were responsible for his death.

Officials said that the man died in Newark after being taken to hospital. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka called for an investigation into the death, and congresswoman Mikie Sherrill said that the administration should be held accountable for the death of the detainee after being transferred from custody.
