Prosecutor says Mississippi mayor indicted over bribery scheme
- Prosecutors say the bribery scheme led to a conviction
- A list of 2024 convictions for the FBI under investigation for bribery
- According to the indictment, the scheme involved more than $115,000 in payments, including a $80,000 payment in cash and $50,000 for company Lumumba
Prosecutors claim that Mississippi Mayor Djeddi Ouenes provided a bribe in exchange for a “favorable” outcome in a case. He was charged with bribery after a scheme in which he allegedly paid money to influence the outcome of the case, prosecutors said.
Ouenes was indicted in 2024 by the FBI, which said two agents would have been paid bribes, prosecutors said. The charges were related to a case involving the mayor’s office.
According to the allegations, Ouenes received more than $115,000 in payments, while a cash payment of $80,000 was made in installments. The remaining $50,000 was allegedly paid for the company Lumumba. Lumumba was named after a person’s surname.
As part of the scheme, Ouenes could have been required to pay money in order to obtain a favorable decision.
Regarding the indictment, Ouenes said that he would be “defending himself,” and that he believed the charges were false and that the investigation was not fair.
Mayor Lumumba is the only person in Mississippi who was not found guilty of bribery. He was also charged with bribery in 2024.
