Ronald Koeman stepped down as coach of the Netherlands national team after their defeat by Morocco at the World Cup. The match ended 1-1, and the Netherlands lost 2-3 in the penalty shootout.
After the match, Koeman said he had made the decision for reasons of his own. In a statement, he said he decided to step down as manager of the Netherlands national team after the defeat.
“Last night, I took the decision to step down as manager of the Netherlands national team” — Koeman wrote. “Winning is important, but I can’t continue if I don’t feel I’m doing the right thing.”
Koeman explained that he had made the decision due to the reasons he had mentioned. He said that “health is priceless,” and that is why he decided to step down.
Koeman announced his departure from the Netherlands after the end of 2023. He coached the national team from 2018 to 2020.
Earlier, it was reported that the Netherlands had not progressed beyond the quarterfinals since 2014, which they did only once.
