Guo Wengui Sentenced to 30 Years for Fraud

In the United States, a Manhattan court sentenced Chinese billionaire Guo Wengui to 30 years in prison in a financial fraud case. The court also ordered him to forfeit $889 million in restitution.

According to prosecutors, Guo defrauded thousands of investors and raised more than $1 billion through entities he controlled. These included the media company GTV Media Group Inc., as well as the Himalaya Farm Alliance and Himalaya Exchange projects.

Judge Analisa Torres said Guo preyed on people who wanted to support democracy in China and used their money to finance a lavish lifestyle. She also said he refuses to take responsibility and allegedly urged his supporters to persecute those who spoke out against him.

During the hearing, Guo said through an interpreter that his goal was to “destroy the CCP.” His defense argued that the case is political in nature and tied to persecution by the Communist Party of China.

Prosecutors said Guo’s actions between 2018 and 2023 caused losses to more than 1,000 people around the world. According to them, the money obtained was spent on mansions, yachts, sports cars, designer clothes, and luxury furniture.

Before his arrest, Guo lived in an apartment overlooking Central Park and was associated with political strategist Steve Bannon. In 2023, he was arrested on fraud charges.
