Supreme Court upholds ban on transgender athletes in certain sports
- The U.S. Supreme Court on June 30, 2026 ruled that the ban on transgender athletes in men’s and women’s sports can be upheld.
- A ruling on West Virginia v. B.P.J. upheld 6-3: the court found that the Title IX challenge to the requirement of whether the punishment was a violation of Title IX.
- The court did not rule on the question of whether transgender athletes who identify as male or female can participate in women’s sports.
In a separate opinion, U.S. Supreme Court Justice wrote that the majority had found that the ban on transgender athletes in men’s and women’s sports was justified by the universities. The ruling was upheld in West Virginia v. B.P.J., which overturned the previous decision, and the court voted 6-3.
In a dissenting opinion, Justice Sonia Sotomayor, joined by Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, wrote that the majority’s decision was wrong. She said that the court did not address the question of whether federal law allows transgender athletes to participate in women’s sports. The court also said that the ban violated the Constitution.
Publications also noted that the ruling was a blow to those who argued that transgender athletes should be allowed to participate in women’s sports. The court said that the ban could be justified by the need to protect women’s sports.
After the decision, critics said that the court had violated the rights of transgender athletes. They also said that the decision would make it harder for transgender athletes to participate in sports. The majority said that the ban was necessary to protect women’s sports.
