- Hinkapie received a red card after VAR review — Mexico’s player for a red card after a match-ending incident during stoppage time.
- VAR overturned the decision on the “attack” call, and the incident was deemed to have happened after the final whistle.
- Mexico won 2:0 in the match, advancing to the 1/8 final, where they will face England or DR Congo.
Arsenal defender Piotr Hinkapie received a red card after a match-ending incident in the 1/16 final of the Champions League against Ecuador. Having scored with a superstrike, he was sent off after the match-ending incident during stoppage time.
At halftime, the score was 2:0 in favor of Ecuador. Hinkapie’s teammates went ahead until the end of the match. Mexico’s Santyago Himenes responded, scoring a goal from a free kick.
After the match, Himenes was furious with the referee’s decision. The VAR review confirmed the decision on the “attack” call.
Hinkapie was sent off for a different foul, which he committed. First, Mikel Almiron was shown a red card for a foul against Trechchchini in the group stage in Paraguay, where he was sent off for a second yellow card.
The automatic offside review system ruled that Hinkapie’s goal should be disallowed, and the match result was changed. In Paraguay, Almiron was also sent off after the automatic review system.
The IFAB has changed the rule: a red card for a foul committed after the final whistle will apply even if the foul is committed during a match. The matter is decided by the referee, who is obliged to take into account the circumstances of the incident. The matter concerns the match between Vinisius Junior and Daniel Prestiani.
Mexico won 2:0 thanks to a goal by Hulan Kionnesa. In the 1/8 final, Mexico will face either England or DR Congo.
