New China law on ethnic unity
- The law bans the use of any form of violence, threats, or other coercive measures to drive ethnic unity.
- Schools must ensure that students, regardless of their ethnicity, study in an atmosphere free of discrimination and that the “ethnic unity” message is integrated into the curriculum.
- Critics say the new law could have an active impact on the country’s political and social situation, including through the suppression of ethnic identity in China.
The new China law on ethnic unity bans the use of 1 million to promote ethnic unity. Violators face fines of up to 56 official penalties.
The law, officially titled Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law, was passed to strengthen unity among ethnic groups. Specifically, it provides for the use of measures to promote “strengthening ethnic unity and progress” and bans actions that undermine ethnic unity. The law also requires the protection of children’s rights and the promotion of “love” for the country and its people.
At the same time, the law requires museums, libraries, and other institutions to display information about Chinese culture. The government may also use various forms of propaganda to ensure that Chinese culture is promoted.
Critics say the new law could be used to suppress ethnic minorities’ rights. The law places restrictions on organizations and individuals that, according to the authorities, “promote” ethnic division or “incite” ethnic hatred.
Critics argue that it could be used to restrict freedom of speech and expression. The law also requires that materials be translated into Chinese and that the Chinese language be promoted in schools.
In addition, the law provides for stricter penalties for those who violate it. The law also requires reporting on violations of the law.
