Ukrainian man tried to enter the monastery after killing a priest

  • Ukrainian police say there was no attempt to break into the monastery or any other violence involved in the incident.
  • He was arrested on 29 April: the investigation says three people were killed, while the other two were wounded.
  • According to the investigation, the suspect, who is 13 years old, attacked the priest with a knife.

Ukrainian police say the suspect tried to enter the monastery where the priest lived, but the Ukrainian security services did not allow him to do so. Police say that, according to the investigation, the suspect was not officially recognized as a believer and had no religious background.

During the arrest, the police say, he resisted and tried to run away. According to police, the suspect attacked the priest and then fled. The police say the priest died from his injuries.

Earlier, the general prosecutor’s office said that the Ukrainian security services had prevented the man from entering the monastery for several days. As the prosecutor’s office said, at around 21:00 on 29 April he had been stopped outside the monastery.

According to the investigation, the suspect had information about the priest’s schedule and decided to attack him. The police say the suspect had planned the attack in advance and used a knife.

The investigation says that the suspect’s mother told investigators that he had been mentally unwell and had been taking medication. According to the prosecutor’s office, the suspect had no criminal record.

CNN previously reported that the motive for the killing remains unclear, but that the priest was killed in 2019 while working in Ukraine. French media, citing Ukrainian sources, reported that the priest had been killed for his religious beliefs.
