Swan advances to Wimbledon second round

  • Swan beat Begu 6-4, 6-4 and became the first Briton to reach the second round.
  • For the 27-year-old tennis player, it was her first appearance at the tournament in three years after back problems.
  • Boulter lost to Grant 4-6, 2-6, while the 18-year-old Italian claimed her first main-draw victory at a major.

Katie Swan became the first British player to reach the second round of Wimbledon 2026 after defeating Romania’s Irina-Camelia Begu 6-4, 6-4. It happened on June 30, the second day of the tournament, after 10 home players who had completed their matches on day one lost.

Swan played her first match at Wimbledon in three years. The 27-year-old Briton returned after long-standing back problems that had previously threatened her career. In the first set, she took the decisive game at 5-4, and in the second she managed to earn another break after a long rally.

Begu managed to save four match points, but Swan finished the match on her own serve. After that, she celebrated an emotional victory.

Meanwhile, Katie Boulter, who had been regarded as one of the British hopes at the tournament, exited in the first round. She lost to 18-year-old Italian qualifier Tyra Caterina Grant 4-6, 2-6 in 1 hour 6 minutes.

Grant, for whom this was her debut in the main draw of a Grand Slam tournament, did not allow Boulter to create a single break point. In the match, she won the first set after an early break, and in the second she added another and closed out the game with a run of four straight games.
