Marcelo Büelsa left Uruguay with the CS-2026 group stage in the bag, having won the next match, and also made comments about the upcoming match, which he called “a matter of pride,” after the team’s 1-0 victory over Spain.
Uruguay won two matches in a row: first, they defeated Saudi Arabia with a score of 1-0, and then they beat the United Arab Emirates 1-0. When asked why the team’s third match in Group H went so differently, the coach said he couldn’t have predicted it.
Büelsa named his team’s “duty to win” as the reason, saying that what matters most is “not losing heart,” which, in his view, wins games. “We have to play with confidence and not give up,” he added, noting that the team’s performance in the second half was decisive.
However, the coach also noted that the team’s opponents were not the same level in the group stage. “We had to adjust our tactics depending on the opponent,” he said, adding that the players showed discipline and did not lose their composure.
Also, Büelsa commented on the match against Spain, saying that the team’s victory was not accidental. “We knew what we needed to do, and the players executed the plan,” he said. He also noted that the team’s defense was especially important, as it prevented the opponent from creating clear chances.
Speaking about the match against Spain, Büelsa said that the team had a clear plan and that the victory came from hard work. “We were focused from the first minute,” he said. “We didn’t let them play the way they wanted, and we took our chances.”
