Rhythm Heaven Groove on Switch proves its rhythm
- Rhythm Heaven Groove shines on Switch 2, shaping up to be a mini-game collection that’s all about music
- The series’ familiar formula is still there, with each stage adding new twists, and that’s also true of Beatspell
- It’s a game that demonstrates how TV gameplay can be made with short rhythm sequences
About the game, see The Verge and CNET.
Rhythm Heaven Groove on Nintendo Switch is, in a word, a blast — a two-lane rhythm game. The series, which wasn’t originally on Switch, still manages to bring its musical minigames to the platform, and does so in a way that works.
At its core, Rhythm Heaven is built around short, punchy rhythm mini-games. In Groove, the premise is straightforward: you’re given a melody to perform, and the game asks you to tap out the rhythm. The trick is that the rhythm you’re supposed to follow isn’t just laid out for you — you have to keep up with it in real time.
The structure, as the author explains, is simple: you start a stage, and then you have to complete it. When the rhythm begins, you need to follow it; if you do, the game rewards you. But if you miss the beat, the stage will move on without you.
Even so, the game’s premise is still built around musical stages. The music is not the background — it’s the main event. And the gameplay is designed so that you can’t just mindlessly tap along; you have to actually listen.
In other words, Rhythm Heaven Groove is a rhythm game that makes you pay attention. And that’s exactly why it works so well on Switch.
CNET calls it a $40 game, and also notes that it’s a fun way to play on Switch. The Verge, meanwhile, highlights that the music in the game is so catchy that you’ll end up singing it to yourself.
