Heatwave risk recorded on the U.S. East Coast: temperatures could reach 110 degrees
- Meteorologists say that the heat on the U.S. East Coast could last for up to 4 days, with temperatures peaking along Interstate 95.
- Across the region, heat will build up in inland areas, while in coastal cities, medical resources will be stretched, as the heat wave intensifies.
- Forecasts indicate that heat records will be set, from Washington, D.C., to Columbus, Ohio, and as far as New York.
Meteorologists warn of a heat risk that could affect the U.S. East Coast for up to 4 days. In particular, on Thursday, the most intense conditions are expected along Interstate 95.
Temperatures may rise between the upper 90s and low 100s across Washington, D.C., Columbus, Ohio, and as far as Boston. Heat could persist through 110 degrees or higher.
According to the National Weather Service, record highs—“major” or “extreme”—could be reached by the end of the day. The temperature could break records set long ago, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
Temperatures may soar in the following areas: Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Raleigh, North Carolina. The National Weather Service’s “Heat Health” advisory is in effect through Thursday, and a warning has been issued for 4 days. In Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio, the heat index could reach up to 5 days, while in inland cities, medical resources will be stretched.
New York City is expected to see the hottest conditions, with mobile medical units deployed, as the heat wave intensifies. In total, 2,200 LinkNYC kiosks will be used to provide cooling.
In the meantime, heat records are expected to be broken. In Washington, D.C., temperatures could reach 104 degrees on Thursday, while in Denver, the day could be as high as 105 degrees, and in the Midwest, the record could be 100 degrees, set in 1919. In New York, meanwhile, temperatures could reach 110 degrees.
Experts say that the heat wave will be driven by “extremely” high pressure over the region, which traps heat in place. CNN meteorologists say that the heat is likely to be caused by a global pattern.
Evening weather on the U.S. East Coast could be influenced by the same conditions as in the U.K. Guardian reports that, as of 2026-07-02, the hottest days in recent years are expected to occur, and that the heat could reach record highs for this time of year.
