Infowars’ Alex Jones to be sued by The Onion for $100,000 over Sandy Hook claims
- The Onion proposes Infowars pay up to the tune of $100,000 per week.
- After $100,000 in merchandise sales, the company behind the brand claims it’s already paid for itself.
- The Onion says that it will continue to sell the same products with the same claims.
Satirical news outlet The Onion is offering Alex Jones’ Infowars a deal: in exchange for moving forward with a parody of the Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting, the outlet will provide the conspiracy site with a $100,000 payment.
According to court documents, Infowars’ parent company, which has been sued by the families of victims, is seeking to avoid paying $1 billion in damages by arguing that, as part of a settlement, The Onion would have to pay $100,000 to the company behind the “infamous” logo. The Onion’s plan is to avoid the settlement by continuing to sell the products, which it says are “clearly satirical.”
In a statement, The Onion Ben Collins said the company will be taking on Infowars’ “misleading” style, adding that it will “sell the same products, but with a different message.” The Onion also said it will be “flattening” the “penis” and “oxygen” products to prevent the “harmful” effects of the conspiracy site’s claims.
In a statement, Infowars said it will soon be closing its doors and will be moving on to “bigger and better things.” The Onion, meanwhile, said it will continue to mock the main Infowars site, while also taking aim at Collins’ parody logo and claiming it will “keep the joke going” in Ostin, Texas.
