Mother sues businesswoman over alleged harassment
- In 2017, a mother filed a lawsuit against Daphne Karuana Galizia, accusing her of harassment.
- Prosecutors allege that the defendant sent threatening messages to the mother, including a message with the words “17 Black,” and that this was followed by a threat from Melvin Themi.
- The court found that the defendant had started bombarding the mother with messages: two were sent by the defendant and one was sent by a third party. The court found that the defendant’s actions caused the mother to experience fear and anxiety.
The mother had sued for 44,000 euros from Daphne Caruana Galizia, claiming that she had filed a lawsuit in 2017. The case concerns whether the defendant’s actions were illegal, and whether the defendant’s conduct caused the mother to suffer.
In court, the defendant denied any wrongdoing. She said that the messages were not sent by her and that they were sent by another person. The court found that the defendant had sent the threatening messages and that they were intended to intimidate the mother.
The court ruled that the defendant had harassed the mother by sending messages. The court found that the mother had been caused to fear and that the defendant’s actions were unlawful. The court ordered the defendant to pay the mother €150,000 ($170,000). The mother’s lawyer said the court’s decision was final.
Daphne Caruana Galizia’s lawyer said the court’s decision was unjust, and that the court had not considered the evidence properly. He said that the court had not taken into account the defendant’s arguments and that the decision was based on speculation.
Three judges ruled that the appeal was dismissed. The court found that the defendant had sent the messages and that the messages were intended to intimidate the mother. The court also found that the defendant had damaged the mother’s reputation. The court said that the defendant’s actions were unlawful and that she must pay compensation to the mother.
The court noted that Reporters Without Borders had said that the court’s decision was part of a pattern of harassment against journalists in Europe.
Earlier, Maltese authorities had arrested Daphne Caruana Galizia’s mother for allegedly sending threats to her. The mother was also reportedly investigated in 2020 for posting defamatory statements. In 2021, she was fined for violating the law on defamation. The mother was also reportedly investigated for posting threats on social media.
The mother’s lawyer said that the defendant, Tumas Group, had an interest in the business, and that it had allegedly used threats and intimidation to pressure the mother. He said that the defendant’s actions were unlawful and that she must be held accountable.
