In the first two months, Russia launched drones over Kyiv with missile strikes. The report says that the number of missile strikes has doubled since the beginning of the year, and that the attacks are ongoing.
The head of Kyiv Vitaliy Klitschko said on Telegram that a missile strike hit the city center. He reported that there are casualties.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his address that the missile strike was carried out with a large-scale attack, and that the situation is being clarified.
DW also noted that what happened in Kyiv was part of Russia’s broader strategy, and that the attacks are aimed at destabilizing Ukraine.
According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), in 2026 Russia will conduct a new wave of attacks on Ukraine, with the number of missile strikes increasing significantly. The report estimates that the number of strikes could reach 1.4 million in the period from April 2022 to June 2026, including both air and ground attacks, with an estimated 400,000–450,000 strikes.
According to CSIS estimates, Ukrainian air defenses intercepted 525,000 to 625,000 missiles and drones between 125,000 and 150,000 strikes. The report also notes that the exact figures may vary depending on the source.
CSIS also predicts that Russian missile and drone strikes will continue to increase, and that the intensity of attacks will remain high.
According to CSIS, in 2026 Russia will increase its attacks on Ukraine, and the share of intercepted missiles and drones could reach 90% of Russian strikes.
