The 36-year-old Karlsson has been in the NHL since 2008, after being selected with the 27th overall pick by Washington Capitals. In 2018, he won the Stanley Cup with the Anaheim Ducks.

In the 2025-2026 season, Karlsson played 14 games in 16 regular-season matches for Anaheim. He finished the season with 12 points. Lightning head coach John Cooper said he is looking forward to having Karlsson on the roster.

Tampa Bay has signed its right-side defenseman, adding Carolina Hurricanes forward to the lineup. The team has also added Zach Werenski from the Columbus Blue Jackets in a deal that could be worth $8.5 million.
