Nagelsmann will not step down after Germany’s exit

  • Julian Nagelsmann said that he does not intend to leave his post and is ready to continue working if the federation supports it.
  • Germany lost to Paraguay in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in extra time; José Canale scored the decisive kick.
  • After the exit, a possible return of Jürgen Klopp is being discussed again, but he said he is not thinking about that job at the moment.

Julian Nagelsmann said that he will not resign as head coach of the Germany national team after the defeat to Paraguay in the round of 16 of the World Cup. He said he will stay if the German Football Association wants to continue working with him.

Germany lost to Paraguay 3-4 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at the end of extra time. Kai Havertz, Nick Woltemade and Jonathan Tah missed their penalties for the Germans, while José Canale converted the decisive spot kick.

After the match, Nagelsmann admitted that part of the fans may demand his departure. He also said that not everyone in Germany supports him continuing in the job.

The defeat was yet another early exit for Germany at major tournaments. The team has not reached the World Cup quarter-finals since 2014, and at the two previous World Cups it ended its campaign at the group stage.

In the wake of the defeat, talk has again turned to a possible appointment of Jürgen Klopp. The former Liverpool manager is working as an expert on German television during the tournament, and had previously already been linked with the job in the Germany national team. Klopp himself said after the match that he had not thought about the position and that he currently has a job he enjoys.

Nagelsmann has been in charge of the national team since September 2023. In January 2025, he signed a contract extension that runs until after Euro 2028.
