Match England vs Mexico: Pub opening hours could be extended to 1am
- Match England vs Mexico: Pub opening hours could be extended to 1am
- Pubs may apply to extend their opening hours by submitting a Temporary Event Notice (TEN)
- Steve Rydzak has said he will appeal against the decision, claiming the match should be allowed to be screened until the end
Match England vs Mexico is scheduled to start on at 1am UK time, with pubs opening hours potentially extending until after the match. The match is expected to start at 1am UK time.
A pro-democracy lawmaker, Marcus Wilkins, has written to the authorities, saying that «fans could end up drinking all night». «If the match is not allowed to continue until after 1am, it could lead to disorder,» he said.
The Minister for Local Government, Steve Rydzak, said that the decision to reject the application was made because pubs can only apply for a Temporary Event Notice (TEN) for a limited period of time. If the match is due to start at 1am, the TEN would have to be submitted for the time window between 9pm and 10pm.
British Beer and Pub Association chief executive Emma McClarkin said the organisation understands the rules but called for a change to allow pubs to screen the match until the end. She said the decision means pubs could close early, leaving fans unable to watch the match.
England vs Mexico will be broadcast in the 1/8 final stage, with England playing against the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 in the group stage. The proposal was also made by fans who want pubs to be able to screen the match until 1am.
