Hernán Alberto Gil Flores survived the earthquake after being buried in sand in Mexico City, according to reports on 24 June.
According to the BBC, the man survived because he had a “substantial” supply of air and water after being trapped under rubble. He was able to breathe through a crack in the ground and was found by rescuers after a long search. The BBC also said that he was able to survive thanks to the fact that he had been in a park-like area and that the earthquake had not destroyed the shelter completely.
AP reports that Hernán Alberto Gil Flores was buried in sand at Galerías Playa Grande for four days. Rescuers found him alive after they heard him calling for help.
Rescuers said they were able to locate him after hearing his voice. BBC material also suggests that he survived because he had a supply of oxygen and water. The BBC also said that he had been trapped in a spot where the rubble did not fully collapse, allowing him to remain alive.
BBC also reports that at least 2,300 people were killed in the earthquake on 24 June, with many more injured.
According to BBC, a physical contact with Hernán took place at 10:00 p.m. (local time) before rescuers heard his voice. The rescuers said that he was able to survive because he had a pocket of air near him and that he was able to breathe until rescuers arrived.
