NBA tests a new rule about reviewing out-of-bounds calls in Summer League

  • The NBA will test in Summer League the rule “out-of-bounds review,” under which a single, two, or three out-of-bounds plays can be reviewed with the standard review system.
  • The rule applies only to the last two minutes of each half, and the match will be decided by standard review.
  • That is why the NBA tests the new rule in advance, for the sake of understanding the possible outcomes of the review system.

The NBA explained that what is called the “out-of-bounds review” will be a new format, in which the NBA will be able to review one, two, or three out-of-bounds situations. The rule will take effect in the same way as the current challenge system, which allows teams to challenge the last-touch out-of-bounds calls. In other words, the challenge will be made only in the case of a dispute.

In the material, the NBA notes that the “out-of-bounds review” was approved in advance by the G League for the 2019-20 season, after which teams began using it.

In addition, the NBA tests the “challenge” basketball rule with the help of the video review system for viewing out-of-bounds calls. The NBA notes that the challenge will be available during the last two minutes of each half, and the review will be conducted using the standard review system.

According to the schedule, the new format will be tested by the Competition Committee, and the Summer League match will be reviewed in the California Classic.
