Australian forward Sam Kerr has signed a contract with Gotham FC, keeping her in the National Women’s Soccer League after Chelsea. The club announced that the deal runs through 2030.
Kerr, who is 32 years old, has spent her career with Sky Blue, having scored for Gotham in 2015-2017. As AP reported, she said she was excited to continue her career in the future.
It comes as Kerr will debut for Gotham at Queen’s Classic against Washington Spirit at Citi Field in New York on July 15. According to AP, the match sold out more than 30,000 tickets.
ESPN reports that Kerr was close to reaching an agreement in the NWSL, but she chose to sign with Chelsea rather than stay in the league. The material also states that Kerr had a clear reason for her decision: she grew up with the idea of playing in the Women’s World Cup.
According to AP, Kerr has scored the most goals in NWSL history with 77 goals and won the league’s Golden Boot in 2017 and 2019. AP also notes that Kerr is the top scorer with 75 goals for Matildas, and that she won the Women’s World Cup 2023, which is why Australia and New Zealand will host the tournament.
President of Gotham FC football operations, Yel Avrukh West, according to AP, said that the club is pleased with the signing. ESPN also reports that Kerr is the NWSL High Impact Player, which includes a $1 million signing bonus, and that she will miss the rest of the season with an ACL injury.
