The 40-year-old goalkeeper’s announcement about Manuel Neuer’s retirement came after Germany’s national team eliminated the Netherlands in the final.
After the penalty shootout in the 1/8 final against Portugal, which decided the match, the German goalkeeper’s saved penalty was followed by a 3-4 penalty shootout. Neuer saved one penalty, but the decisive kick was missed by the Netherlands’ goalkeeper, and Neuer’s team ultimately advanced.
Neuer said he decided to retire after the match with the Netherlands at Euro 2024. In 2026, he will complete his career: the goalkeeper will retire after the tournament.
In the meantime, Neuer continued to play regularly for his club. In the final group match, he helped his team reach the playoffs. However, he was unable to avoid defeat in the quarterfinals.
Neuer has played 128 matches for Germany, debuting in 2009. He won 1/8 finals with his team at Euro 2010, and later helped Germany win the 2014 World Cup, becoming the tournament’s best goalkeeper.
