Trump criticizes NATO for spending too little on defense, ahead of meeting with Ukraine’s Zelensky
- Trump said that the U.S. does not “pay its fair share” to NATO, and that the alliance’s member states in Europe are spending less than they should, with Ukraine paying 7–8 percent of its GDP.
- On Truth Social, Trump posted that the “U.S. has not been paying” and also claimed that European countries are “taking advantage” of the situation through their “unfair” approach.
- In a 24-country poll, the material shows that NATO’s support for Ukraine’s development of military technology is already obvious.
President of the United States Donald Trump said that the U.S. does not pay its “fair share” within NATO’s “guidelines,” and that this is less than Ukraine pays.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that “we will not be doing this for them!!!” and also added that NATO’s “Yourингтон” is “not paying enough.” The material also notes that Trump previously criticized European allies for their “unfair” approach to the war in Ukraine.
Trump, as he has said, is allegedly pointing to the fact that Europe has to pay more, while Washington should not be paying “for everyone.” The material also claims that in the fourth quarter he published a report on NATO, where the U.S. is investing significantly more, while other European countries are investing less.
According to the material, after the U.S. withdrew from NATO, the U.S. defense spending increased by about 5% by 2035. It also says that the U.S. will remain committed to NATO and will continue to support Ukraine.
The material also cites a report by Marko Rubio, which says that the U.S. is spending more than NATO countries in terms of defense spending. It also claims that Rubio said that the U.S. is not interested in continuing to pay for Europe’s defense.
At the same time, NATO, which includes 32 member states, is spending on average 7 to 8 percent of Ukraine’s GDP. In his view, the result of the poll in 24 EU countries shows that the European countries’ support for Ukraine is already obvious.
Based on the poll results, 14% of respondents say they are ready to help Ukraine (i.e., the U.S.), while 40% would prefer to transfer responsibility to European countries. The material also notes that 41% would like to help, while 43% are against providing any assistance. It also says that 58% want to help Ukraine, while 27% do not support any further aid.
The material also suggests that 46% of Europeans believe that the U.S. should increase its defense spending on Ukraine’s military technology, and that the best way to do this is to impose sanctions on states that do not meet their obligations within NATO. It also notes that 76% of respondents think that the U.S. should continue to support Ukraine.
The material further states that the average number of people who want NATO to continue to support Ukraine is 41%, and that the highest support is in Germany, while the lowest is in the United Kingdom.
