Ukraine uses a “kill zone” and a “gray zone” in Donbas
- The Guardian describes a “kill zone” as a strategy of firing missiles at Russian forces in Donbas, targeting points of their movement with Lyman.
- RBC-Ukraine’s material says the commander of the 7th corps, Yevhen Lasiichuk, believes that “kill zone/gray zone” may be resolved up to the point of a year’s end.
- It is believed that Russia’s drone strikes are aimed at destroying the air defense system, including by breaking through it with its drones.
In the meantime, Russian forces in Donbas are conducting an offensive with the Ukrainian term for the “fortress of death,” which describes what is called a “kill zone.” The material also notes that the line of artillery fire is formed with missile strikes, while at the same time it is also possible to strike with drones and artillery at the same time. In particular, it says that the Ukrainian side is using “kill zone” and “gray zone” to describe the areas where Russian forces are firing missiles and drones.
In a publication, The Guardian describes how it is able to track the location of Russian forces in the Donetsk region. It notes that the “kill zone” is created by the Ukrainian military, and that the most significant areas include the areas near Kryvyi Torets and Kazenyi Torets, as well as the area near the city of Dnipro, Kharkiv and Kyiv.
Another example, according to The Guardian, is Lyman, which has a “kill zone.” The same publication says that other areas are also being targeted by artillery and drones, including FPV drones. The text also notes that the “kill zone” is a large area of responsibility that is used to destroy enemy drones, which are shot down through new drones with a larger range; the material also says that the “kill zone” is used to protect the battlefield.
The material adds that, at the moment, The Guardian has narrowed down the area of Lyman to about 1,000 civilians who were living there without electricity, gas, or water supply. It also states that in Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, the buildings were damaged in areas where the shelling by drones and artillery was taking place.
RBC-Ukraine’s commander of the 7th corps, Dеsantno-shturmovi vijs’ka ZSU, brigade general Yevhen Lasiichuk, says that the war in 2022, in particular, has changed the way drones are used. In his view, the Russian forces are using small groups, while the Ukrainian side is using drones to ensure that the enemy cannot advance.
RBC-Ukraine also provides that the 7th corps, which operates in the Pokrovsk–Myrnohrad direction, has a “zаtiatry” Russian shelling. The material notes that, in particular, the Ukrainian side can use “gray zone” or “kill zone.” It says that the interval of a “gray zone” can be from 20–25 kilometers from the front line, while the “kill zone” can be from 30 kilometers from the front line.
The material also states that the systems of command and control of the Ukrainian side are used to ensure the accuracy of the strikes. The Guardian assesses that the “kill zone” is used for civilian targets, while RBC-Ukraine says that the interval between the commander of the 7th corps and the “kill zone” is used for attacks on the front line.
