In the accident on the road in Asyut, a motorcyclist’s collision with a canal resulted in the deaths of children, according to preliminary information.

Transport authorities have opened a case and are investigating the incident in the Asyut region. The police said that the accident happened on the Cairo–Asyut highway, 320 kilometers from Cairo.

Media outlets report that the cause of the accident was unclear at the time. The driver’s body was found near the canal, while the children’s bodies were found downstream. The bodies were transported to Asyut.

According to Cairo 24, the accident occurred near the canal in which the victims were found; the children were aged between 10 and 17. Photos of the accident scene were published, showing that the vehicle had plunged into the water.

Gubernator of Asyut, Mohamed Elwan, said that the driver’s vehicle hit the concrete barrier and then fell into the canal. He also noted that the accident occurred due to the driver’s speeding, and the children were the ones who were hit.

Authorities said that the accident happened after the driver’s vehicle crashed into the barrier, and then the motorcycle fell into the canal, killing 18 people.
