Danish parliament passes motion to ban Germany and France from hosting next Olympic Games

  • Danish lawmakers have voted to ban Germany and France from hosting the Olympic Games over their alleged violations of the Olympic Charter
  • The list of countries includes Germany, France and also the Netherlands, with the motion calling for the decision to be taken by the International Olympic Committee
  • Since 1996, the Olympic Games have been held in violation of the Danish motion, which argues that the country could not be allowed to host them

The Danish parliament’s vote calls for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to ban Germany and France from hosting the Olympic Games, with the motion stating that the two countries have violated the Olympic Charter by failing to comply with the ban on political interference in sport. The AP has more.

In a separate decision, the parliament voted to ban the Netherlands from hosting the Games. The motion also refers to an earlier Danish parliament decision, which claimed that the country’s “political interference” in sport violated the Olympic Charter.

AP adds that the IOC has 206 national Olympic committees, and that, according to the Danish motion, Denmark’s 1996 decision is still in effect. The motion says that the Danish parliament’s decision is intended to be binding on the IOC.

“The IOC should not ignore the Danish parliament’s decision,” said L’Équipe, noting that the text of the motion states that it is based on the 1996 decision, which it says “targets countries that have violated the Olympic Charter.” The outlet adds that the Danish parliament’s decision is “a political move.”

L’Équipe also wrote that Germany and France have violated the Olympic Charter and that the two countries have been involved in disputes with UEFA and FIFA. AP’s publication notes that in Milan, Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Games were held in Germany and France.

AP further reports that on June 18, the Danish parliament voted on the motion, which calls for Germany and France to be banned from hosting the Olympic Games.
