- ICE officers detained the Sisters of the Border, who were on their way to Mass in McAllen
- After the conclusion of Mass, they were detained by ICE, which included Monica de la Cruz, who had just returned from church
- The Sisters of the Border were arrested at South Texas Health System and transferred to the church Our Lady of Sorrows
The Sisters of the Border said that after U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers detained them, they were kept for hours in a room in Texas. In the meantime, while they were still in custody, the church Our Lady of Sorrows in McAllen, where the sisters were supposed to be, was being searched.
The church later released a statement that ICE officers detained the sisters on suspicion of wrongdoing. At the time, the ICE officers were working without permission from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
After the arrest, the sisters were taken to the church Our Lady of Sorrows, which is located in McAllen, where they were supposed to be. The church said that the sisters were arrested because they were suspected of wrongdoing, and that the ICE officers had been working without permission from the DHS.
Brenda RĂos, a Catholic deacon of the Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy, said that the Sisters of the Border were transferred to an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion at Our Lady of Sorrows. She added that she was present when the sisters were arrested at South Texas Health System and that she had been working for 10 years as a hospital chaplain at DHR Health in Edinburg.
According to the church, the sisters were detained for several hours. They said that the ICE officers later released the sisters after the church intervened.
The mother of the sisters also said that they had been fulfilling their religious duties, and that they were doing so peacefully. She added that they were being detained without any legal grounds, and that she was asking for their release.
