X launches hosted MCP server so AI tools can connect to its API

  • X is rolling out a hosted MCP server that will let AI instruments connect to the API through a set of standardized tools
  • Hosted MCP does not introduce new functionality, but instead makes access to certain API capabilities easier for AI tools
  • X is trying to stop spam by requiring third parties to use its API, which should reduce the likelihood of automated abuse

For more details, see TechCrunch and The Next Web.

X has launched a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that allows AI instruments from companies such as Claude, Cursor, and Grok Build to connect to the X API through a set of standardized tools. The server is hosted within X itself, meaning that the developers do not need to set up their own MCP server, and can also benefit from the built-in security features.

It was announced on June 30, 2026. The new server for AI assistants with access to X’s capabilities makes it possible to connect an MCP server, use the X API, and run the process in a single workflow. There is one more step to be taken by X.

Hosted MCP offers new possibilities for the API. Developers will now be able to use API endpoints to search, retrieve, and analyze content, and then build on it. This will make it possible to access new capabilities for AI assistants.

In addition, X is running two MCP servers: one for access to the base API, and another that provides AI instruments with access to documentation for X developers. The other server sends requests to a specific API endpoint for processing user-generated content.

In other words, X says that hosted MCP will help legitimize its platform. X also claims that it is introducing a solution that will help reduce the number of spam, while also making it harder for AI-generated spam to get through.

Within X, access to the API costs $0.015, while sending data costs $0.20 per publication. In a statement, X says it will “curb vectors of misuse,” meaning it will reduce the opportunities for abuse.
