At Wimbledon 30 April, he won in straight sets: the fourth match point was converted by Ben Shelton after the Wimbledon opponent’s serve was broken.
The match on No 2 Court at All England Club went to three sets. Veretennikov, who started from the 140th position in the rankings, managed to break Shelton once and took a 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(8) 6-2, 7-6(12-10) lead before the American ultimately won in a tie-break.
In the end, Shelton, who had been seeded, overcame Veretennikov in 11 out of 12 break points. The American won the crucial tie-break moments, but in the remaining games he had to work hard, as he was unable to convert his chances.
For Shelton, this was the first win in the tournament since 2023, when he won the French Open. That win was his second Grand Slam, and Shelton went on to win the match, which helped him move closer to his goal.
